Man. am I tired of being right!!!!!! Jay Cutler has skipped a workout with the Denver Broncos and is demanding a trade (although the Broncos have not yet allowed Cutler’s agent to negotiate with other teams). So if we subscribe to the mindset that it is never a good idea to set the future of your team on a player who has put his house up for sale and said publicly that he does not want to play for your team anymore, it begs the question, which team will land one of the most promising young QBs in the NFL? Well there are a couple of obvious possibilities. Both Detroit and Tampa Bay were negotiating for Cutler prior to him catching wind of it all and pitching a fit. I mean really, this is a business, get over yourself you petulant child! Sorry, i am digressing.
Detroit Lions- This is a very interesting scenerio…Cutler to Johnson for 14 or 15 years, i can almost hear the boners in Detroit growing. Detroit has 2 first round picks after trading Roy Williams to the Cowboys at the end of season last year. So even if they decide that knowing what they do about Jay Cutler, he would be their first pick in the draft today if he was coming out of college this year, they would still have a late pick in the first round. If they get him for their 20th pick, it is a steal. They would have a serious head start in rebuilding their record setting horrible franchise. (All this is mute because these are the Lions after all, they will never close this deal).
Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Let’s face it, Tampa has been in QB trouble for about 20 years. Even when they won the superbowl, they did it with a “has been” who was released the next year. Chris Simms, Brian Griese, Jeff Garcia, Josh McCown, Bruce Gradikowski, the rights to Jake Plummer??????? need I continue? I am not sure what they are offering but whatever it is offer more!!! Get this done!!
San Francisco 49ers- With the ghosts of Steve Young and Joe Montana looming large in San Fran and the bad taste of Alex Smith in their mouth, this is another team that needs a QB they can be happy with. Sorry guys, Shaun Hill and Damon Huard are not the answer, but Jay Cutler could be.
New York Jets- With the Brett Favre experiment safely behind them, with the carnage of a fired head coach, a tarnished legacy and broken locker room in its wake, the Jets find themselves exactly where they were last year around this time….staring down the barrel of a Kellen Clemens future. Insert Jay Cutler and possibly Torry Holt and say hello to the playoffs.
The Broncos are saying they do not want draft picks for Jay Cutler, they want a quarterback in return. If the teams had a quarterback why would they be trading for a quarterback? I think if that is all Denver will accept we are probably looking at a 3 team deal adding a team that has an under performing young QB, ie Vince Young/Matt Leinhart/Brady Quinn/Derek Anderson.
