Top Targets 2009 for Week 5 (Free agents Dummy!)

October 5, 2009 Top Targets No Comments

rashard-mendenhallAlright, Chad Henne was not a great call, but I am still hanging my hat on Johnny Knox!

Head Smackers:
QBs:
This week doesn’t really have any head smackers at the quarterback position but there are a couple of guys who are obvious pick ups but not great options anyway.

Head Smackers/ Not So Obvious
Seneca Wallace, Seattle- Hasselbeck is supposed to be back at practice this week, but no one knows if he will play or not. Wallace has been serviceable in Matt’s absence. Watch this situation but remember, Wallace is only a spot start at best.

Derek Anderson, Cleveland- Anderson actually looked okay this weekend and with that, the Browns looked okay. He would have looked even better if Edwards had not dropped everything thrown to him. ( watch for Edwards to be wearing a different jersey before the season ends).

RBs:
Michael Bush, Oakland- McFadden is supposed to be out for several weeks which makes Michael Bush the starter. The Raiders are not a great running team this year, but they are an even worse throwing team.

Rashard Mendenhall, Pittsburgh- Mendenhall showed why the Steelers drafted him early with a great showing this weekend…finally. Look for Tomlin to go to him more and more down the stretch.

WRs:
Michael Sims-Walker, Jacksonville- Mike Walker (as he was formerly known) has always been talented, he has just never been healthy. He looks to be healthy and taking Torry Holt’s spot as the WR1 on the jags depth chart.

Steve Smith, NY Giants- Everyone wondered who would pick up the slack from the departure of the self shooting Plaxico Burress….there is no question now. Smith has had 2 double digit catch days already and is showing no signs of slowing down. Keep an eye on Eli’s plantar fasciitis injury, it is like turf toe you never know how bad it will be or if you can play until game day. This could seriously affect Smith’s production if Manning sits.

Not So Obvious
RB:
Ricky Williams, Miami- Ronnie Brown is unquestionably the starter in Miami, but Ricky has very quietly put together a nice season so far. His production has improved consistently week to week and with Brown’s history of injuries and extra workload as a wildcat quarterback, Ricky may have an even bigger role down the stretch.

WR:
Mohamed, Massaquoi, Cleveland- Anderson seems to have a much better chemistry with Massaquoi than he does with Braylon Edwards. If Anderson can hold it together, Massaquoi might be a very pleasant surprise.

Kenny Britt, Tennessee- This youngster is developing into a big play receiver more rapidly than anyone thought he would. If his improvement continues, he is going to make my Justin Gage projection look very stupid.

Sydney Rice, Minnesota- Rice was slow to get his chemistry with Favre but he is a big tall red zone target and seems to be getting his timing down. (Rice just scored again, I should move him up to Head Smackers)

Hail Marys
Austin Collie, Indianapolis- Collie is a Colts receiver and Peyton Manning is off to the best start of his career. He is currently rotating with Pierre Garcon at the WR2 spot opposite Reggie Wayne. He definitely has some fantasy value.

Shonn Green, NY Jets- There are two guys ahead of him on the depth chart for now but Rex Ryan likes him alot.
You can tell by the fact that Green got some action during crunch time on Sunday. Thomas Jones  allowed age to catch up with him a little bit. If you are a Jones owner and you have a roster spot available, it might be a nice insurance policy.
