NFL Training Camp Stories Week 1

July 29, 2009 General No Comments

With the first week of training camp in the books some stories coming out have significant fantasy football implications and will definitely have players moving up and down your cheat sheets.

Brett Favre – Favre decided to stay retired…. for this week anyway. This should make you upgrade Sage Rosenfels who should be the starter in Minnesota this year. With Bernard Berrian, Sidney Rice and newly drafted Percy Harvin to throw to and Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor coming out of the backfield Rosenfels should be able to put up decent numbers this year for you fantasy team.

Michael Crabtree – Crabtree has decided to hold the 49ers hostage by demanding top three pick money. Not sure he aware of this but he was picked in the number ten spot. This should be a long hold out with no end in sight, crippling his fantasy value. Matt Leinhart tried this a couple of years ago and it didn’t go great for him, the difference is that quarterbacks get a premium during contract negotiations and wide receivers don’t. Shaun Hill takes a significant hit as it prohibits him to develop chemistry with the most talented wide receiver in the draft and his team….once he actually shows up.

Terrell Owens – T.O. decided to show up for training camp on time this year, his coach actually calls him by his name and he has received nothing but rave reviews. Is this a new T.O.??? Nah, just the first year with a new team. Wait until the team loses a couple of games or just next year. As for now T.O. has exactly what he wants, a quarterback that is alienating his other teammates to praise him. I believe the quote from Trent Edwards was that Owens dwarfed the other Bills wideouts with regard to work ethic and route running so I would move T.O. up a little on the board.

Braylon Edwards – Reports are Edwards failed his physical to start Browns training camp due to an ankle injury. If this is anything even remotely serious this would mean terrible things for all of the Browns fantasy players. One of the main reasons for the Browns surprising season two years ago was Braylon Edwards phenomenal play. The only way I see them getting back there is Edwards returning to that form, allowing holes to open up for the running game which will give whoever wins the QB job time to throw. Hope it is not a staph infection, but it is the Browns.

Willis McGahee – McGahee started training camp on the PUP list as a “precaution” so his knee doesn’t blow up on him. To add to this there are reports that he has struggled with his conditioning this offseason. This is awful news for a guy with a history of injury and conditioning/attitude problems and at least two guys chomping at the bit to take the starting job. I would watch this situation closely and start moving him down your draft list if he can get further down.

Fantasy Football Advice and Cheat Sheets

As we creep up on Fantasy Football Season, you are bound to be bombarded by everyone under the sun with fantasy football advice and their opinion of who is going to be a great pick this season. Because of the enormous popularity of fantasy football in the last few years, it has lead to an uncountable number of services fantasy football cheat sheets and prognosticators telling you how to win your league. So the question is how to you judge the cream from the crap? Well let’s start with fantasy football cheat sheets.

Fantasy Football Cheat Sheets

The first telltale sign of whether a fantasy football cheat sheet is worth its salt is the date it was published. During the football preseason, the balance of power in training camp position battles can change from hour to hour, let alone day to day. If a cheat sheet that you are looking at was published more than a week ago, it is probably not that accurate. If you subscribe to a fantasy football cheat sheet service, like our UberRank system, they should be update every week minimum. This ensures that any developments in training camp, like a coach deciding to go to a runningback by commitee system, is taken into consideration. The other big issue in training camp that needs to be updated frequently and greatly affects the fantasy value of a player is injury. If your football player ranking is published once a season or even once a month, you might end up picking a player in your draft that recently suffered a season ending injury, which means in turn that you just suffered a potentially season ending injury. Remember when it comes to fantasy football player rankings no one source is good enough. Cheat sheets are wrought with bias so you should consult as many sources as possible to make sure you don’t base your whole season on a fantasy cheat sheet that ranked Brian Westbrook as the number one player just because the writer loves the Eagles. For this reason, composite ratings like our UberRank Fantasy Football Cheat Sheet will always give you the best chance to win.

Fantasy Football Advice

Now let’s talk about fantasy football advice. Like all things in life, information is only as good as its source. When reading football blogs and fantasy football blogs or articles specifically, there are some easy ways to quickly discern whether the author is an insightful well informed asset to your fantasy football arsenal or just a blow hard who likes to hear his/her own voice. References!!!! If the author expresses opinion, it is expected, but look for the line of thought that brought them to their assumptions. At the end of the day, an opinion is just that but if they let you know the steps in their thought process you at least have the information to decide whether you agree with the path they took to get to their opinion. Chances are if they are quoting situational statistics and interviews with coaches, they are either reprinting what they read on ESPN or they know their stuff. Either way you are probably safe. If the are just spouting venom or summations without any back up or footnotes, they probably haven’t won many league because they don’t do research!!!
The next temperature test for fantasy football advice is the tone. If the writer is overly opinionated or critical without reason be aware. If the writer is overly complimentary to a certain player or team….their a HOMER, again be aware.

Fantasy football is an imperfect science. There are so many variables that you are always going to need a kiss from lady luck to make a great run, but if you can get a line on some consistently good information and fantasy football advice, you will be able to make informed decisions. If you can get your hands on an accurate and frequently updated fantasy football cheat sheet, you will start the season with the best draft possible.

Good Luck fantasy football diehards.

How Do You Solve a Problem Like Michael Vick?

July 15, 2009 General 1 Comment

Michael VickThe second most talked about quarterback comeback in the NFL this year might be the most intriguing. With last year’s re-emergence of the old school single wing offense (which has been renamed in the modern era as the “wildcat”) many analysts are speculating that Michael Vick could re-enter an NFL that is tailor made for his skill set. There are a couple of compelling questions in this scenario. First, will NFL defenses spend some time in the film room during the off season and remember why teams stopped using the single wing in the first place? Will there be teams willing to take a risk on a quarterback who was arguably too one dimensional in his prime and is now 2 years removed from football (and who has obvious life decision making skill deficiencies)? Will “Big Daddy” Roger Goodell accept the debt that Michael Vick paid to society as the debt paid to the NFL as well? Of course the biggest question for us is how will any of this affect the fantasy landscape? Will Michael Vick have any fantasy relevance at all?

The problem with the “Wildcat” offense is that unless the person taking the snap is actually a true threat to throw and the offense is willing to actually use their quarterback who is now split out as a wide receiver and incur all of those injury risks, the defenses will start cheating the guy taking the snap. Traditionally, defenses don’t have a man dedicated to defending the QB. This is why the “Wildcat” gave defenses fits last year, because you had a skilled RB or WR who was a true threat to make plays taking the snap and the defenses had no one accounting for that player. This year teams will start to cheat on that formation. Michael Vick is very intriguing in this situation because in his prime, he was arguably the best running back on the team. In addition, he did have a world class arm when he chose to use it, so he is a legitimate NFL quarterback. Michael Vick was and possibly is a quarterback that is tailor made for the “Wildcat”.

We have seen time and time again in the NFL that talent excuses bad behavior so the question is not “will someone pick him up”, the question is “who will pick him up”? Here are a few maybes. Tampa Bay: The Bucks have no proven quarterback and they run the west coast offense which is perfect for Vick’s skill set. Plus, the have an offense that is badly in need of some punch or at least a light slap. San Francisco: The 49ers are in desperate need of anyone with consistent talent to line up under center. They drafted a franchise wide receiver so they might want to get him the ball. Washington: The Redskins have been trying with all of there might to replace Jason Campbell with …everyone so why not Michael Vick? Plus Dan Snyder loves to spend big money on long shots that don’t work out…..kismet! Here are a few other choices that are probably nots but you just never know: Denver, because Kyle Orton can be very Kyle Ortony and when he is, it is tough to look past his Kyle Ortonness. Miami because it is their offense and they might want to improve. Cincinnati: They are only on this list because they scout the penal system for talent.

So, this leaves us with “Big Daddy” Roger Goodell. Although he has been very tough on players that have made bad decisions but received wrist slaps by the law, this is his first chance to rule on a matter where the player has already be judged very harshly by society and jurist prudence. Since Michael Vick has spent 2 the better part of 2 years out of football and inside of the set of Shawshank Redemption, the chances are he will reinstate Vick the question is will it be this year? This begs the next question, which is “will three years out of football turn Michael Vick into Jimmy Walker?” I guess we will have to wait for the emperor, uh I mean commissioner to let us know. Our money is on reinstatement but don’t look for him to be what he was, at least for a while.

So although Michael may come back to an NFL that has opportunities perfectly suited for Michael Vick, it might be suited for the Michael Vick of 2005. Only time will tell.
